On Sunday, May 19, 2024, REACH Rotary in partnership with the Town of Huntington and Cornell Cooperation Extension Marine Program, will be hosting hands-on stations at the Huntington Water Front Festival featuring their Oyster Reef restoration, cultivating Sugar Kelp, Half-Shell recycling, and Native Plants for its Rotary Day of Service.

The Rotary Club of REACH – Environmental Action Coalition of Huntington is a public/private partnership between the Town of Huntington, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County Marine Program and local Rotary Clubs. Our goals are to improve water quality, to restore habitat and to support aquaculture efforts to the benefit of bathers, boaters and baymen.

Their tables will feature their four main initiatives:

1. Spat-On-Shell: Growing spat-on-shell oyster during the summer to create a network of spawner sanctuaries in closed waters.
2. Sugar Kelp: Cultivating sugar kelp during the winter in town embayments to reduce excess nitrogen and other impurities, with various end-uses yet to be determined.
3. Half Shells: Collecting half-shells of clams and oysters year round to be recycled and cured in HUntington, ultimately for use as a substrate for spat-on-shell production at the CCE Marine hatchery in Southold.
4. Native Plants: Working to preserve biodiversity and ecosystem function on Long Island by providing commercial sources of genetically appropriate local (ecotypic) plant materials

Whether you’re in Rotary or not, we’d love to have your help for as much of the day as you can spare! Please sign up to volunteer, and we’ll be in touch.
