On Saturday, May 18, 2024, Ronkonkoma Rotary will be hosting two projects. The first project will be located at St. Joseph's Church in Ronkonkoma, where volunteers will pack duffel bags with basic necessities for homeless veterans to benefit General Needs Ltd. The second project will be located at Bethel Hobbs Community Farm in Centereach, where volunteers will perform a variety of farm work, including planting seedlings, working in the greenhouse, and property maintenance.
Volunteers are asked to wear clothes they don't mind getting dirty, wear closed toed shoes, and bring a pair of gardening or work gloves with them. Volunteers will need to fill out a waiver on site to participate.
General Needs is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization serving veterans for over 14 years. They provide essential items, such as socks, underwear, t-shirts, warm jackets, boots, and hygiene products. They are dedicated to creating a better future for America’s veterans.
Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a cooperative gardening project that has grown to over five acres and donates an average of 30,000 lbs. of fresh, organically grown produce to several local food pantries and soup kitchens. Passport Rotary will distribute some of this produce later this year to nomadic houseless families living on the east end of Long Island, through their Share the Blessings Mobile Food Pantry.
